Venous Disease Screening Programs
The American Venous Forum (AVF), Venous Disease Screening Programs are designed to promote increased national awareness about venous diseases including:
- Venous thromboembolism (VTE) - deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism
- Chronic venous insufficiency
- Varicose veins
- Leg swelling and lymphedema
Venous screening is important because:
- Venous disease is common
- Venous disease can be fatal
- Venous disease causes long-term disability
Through the AVF, National Screening Programs, directed venous disease education will broaden understanding and awareness about venous disease and ultimately reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with these venous disorders.

Venous disease screening programs provide an innovative way to reach out to community members, health care professionals and the media while delivering useful health care information.
Together through the AVF Venous Disease Screening Programs, we can:
- Raise public awareness of venous disease
- Hospital patients are at high risk for venous problems especially DVT/PE
- VTE leads to substantial cost, morbidity and mortality for hospitals
- To make the community aware of the services you offer to treat venous disease
Who Can Be A Screening Center?
Any organization can be a screening center including:
- Hospitals
- Physician practices
- Medical Centers
- Community Service Organizations
- Clinics
- Ambulatory Care Centers
What Is Needed To Participate In Screenings?
Each center is responsible for providing:
- Space
- Equipment
- Event planning/media outreach
- Administrative support and materials
- A health care professional for conducting exit interviews
The AVF provides:
- The tool kit that serves as the "How to…."guide.
- The printed materials including the Venous Report card and educational materials.
- Assistance from the central AVF screening office to answer questions and provide general guidance.

Venous Screening Program - Expert Consultation
An AVF expert will assist you in advance of your screening event via teleconference and travel to your location to assist in running a successful screening event.

The AVF will coordinate a large scale live screening event to include all staffing, equipment, supplies, medical professionals and marketing.
Venous Disease/Screening CME Educational Lecture
AVF Invited Speaker: AVF members are a group of dedicated volunteers who are trained on educating the both the public and health care providers about venous disease. If requested, an expert can be engaged to speak at your institution or event.
Venous Screening Lectures/Presentation Slides: Two slides sets are available for your use. One slide set has been developed for the general public and could be used in conjunction with a screening event to improve awareness of all forms of venous disease. The second slide set has been developed with the health care provider in mind. In addition to diagnosis, treatment and prevention strategies discussion will include how risk factors are assessed and treatment options.
